ISLAMABAD, Jan. 20 (Gwadar Pro) – Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday evening said that the COVID-19 vaccine from China will soon be available in Pakistan.

The PM chaired a cabinet committee meeting on the COVID-19 situation in Pakistan and the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines. The cabinet committee, formed on the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines, briefed the Prime Minister about the recently approved COVID-19 vaccines in the country, said an official statement.

The committee briefed the meeting that the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) had approved two vaccines – China’s Sinopharm and Oxford-AstraZeneca for emergency use in Pakistan.

The officials told the premier that the authorities were in contact with both parties for the supply of the vaccines as soon as possible. They said Iron Brother China had been very cooperative.

PM Imran Khan directed the committee to accelerate measures for the early provision of two COVID-19 vaccines approved by DRAP.

The meeting was attended by the head of the National Command and Operation Centre (NNCOC) Asad Umar, Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr.Faisal Sultan, Federal Minister for Industries Hammad Azhar and SAPM on Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation Dr. Sania Nishtar.

On Monday Pakistan had approved the Chinese Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use. The announcement came two days after AstraZeneca’s vaccine developed with Oxford University received a similar authorization.

DRAP said the vaccine, manufactured by China National Pharmaceutical Group (SinoPharm), had been given Emergency Use Approval (EUA).

Pakistan’s health ministry said the country was in process of speaking to different vaccine makers. “The two COVID-19 vaccines have been granted EUA with certain conditions,” a DRAP’s spokesman said, adding that both vaccines have been evaluated for their safety and quality.

The cabinet committee told PM Khan that steps were being taken to procure doses of two approved COVID vaccines as soon as possible.

Sinopharm, a state-run Chinese firm, is developing coronavirus vaccines. Pakistan will purchase 1.2 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from China.
